Teacher Writing a Formula on a Blackboard

Math Literacy Project

First funded by the California State University Office of the Chancellor, the Math Literacy Project will improve the instructional practices of math teachers. According to the research, most teachers desire to serve their students better; however, they must possess the requisite skills and knowledge to engage students through a cultural and linguistic assets-based frame. The Math Literacy Project will empower faculty to move beyond the deficit narrative about historically underserved students' inability to thrive in rigorous math settings toward an understanding of their immense capacity via culturally responsive math pedagogy.

Since its inception, school districts and community colleges in California, Ohio, and Delaware have participated, inspiring over 500 teachers, faculty, administrators, students, parents/caregivers, and communities to reimagine a world of affirming mathematics experiences, especially for disenfranchised populations.
